By Alvin R. Santiago, SSA President
It was a busy month of April for the SSA. In case you missed something, I will give you a quick synopsis of our month.
First off, I would like to congratulate our Jimmy R. Smith Scholarship Award Winner, Justin Mercugliano. Justin is the grandson of shareholder services veteran and longtime SSA member Peter Descovich. Our scholarship winner balances academic excellence with a love of sports and outdoors activities. He plans to enter Pennsylvania’s University of Scranton later this year with a focus on a career in nursing. The treatment he received for a head injury sustained on the rugby field was a major factor in his decision to focus on nursing as a career. “I was fortunate enough to have a nurse who specialized in concussions,” Justin recalls. “I’ve always been a hands-on person, and I enjoy helping people. When I saw how this nurse was able to help me it opened up a wide set of possibilities, in terms of a career.”
I’m sure Justin will prosper in his selected field and the SSA will be there to help in his endeavor. If you have a child or grandchild searching for scholarship opportunities please go to our website, the description of the scholarship program can be found under the “About Us” tab.
Speaking of endeavors, on April 14, 2016 we filed our response to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. A task that was accomplished by a team comprised of SSA Board, non-board members across all sized issuers, both commercial and in-house agents and was led by our Vice President Bernadette Maffei. The group was tasked with the opportunity to help inform the SEC on issues that are important to our Members and advocate for topics that you as Members are most concern. With only six weeks to complete our response, it was a large undertaking by this group and we are very thankful for all of their hard work. You can find the SSA response by visiting the SSA Website.
On that same date we had a webinar on Dematerialization which gave an in-depth analysis of dematerialization as told by an Issuer and Service Provider. The webinar was well attended and several engaging questions was posed to our panel. If you missed this webinar or would like to take a look at past webinars, they are accessible on the SSA website. Our next webinar will be in June. Look for details coming soon.
2016 is a year of celebration for the SSA as we celebrate its 70th Anniversary. To kick off the celebration, the SSA Board of Directors will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on May 18th. The following day will be our luncheon at Battery Gardens Restaurant in New York City.
Our celebration of the SSA’s 70th Anniversary won’t stop there, so be on the lookout for the festivities to continue at the 2016 Annual Conference at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago. Please check the SSA website for more information on the agenda, activities and registration for both the hotel and conference, as well as Sponsorship opportunities.
You can also find in that same section on the website a conference justification letter written by the SSA Conference Committee to help justify the SSA Annual Conference to your supervisor. Simply fill in your supervisor’s name and address and hand it to him!
